Turning Up the Volume: Gsus4’s Grassroots Music Story

Inside the community‑driven space bringing musicians together in Parramatta.

From worldclass gear to intimate live sessions, Gsus4 Music Gear & Supply Co. sits at the heart of Western Sydney’s music community. Through its musician led approach and the Burnt Butter Jam live sessions, Gsus4 has helped create space for local talent to connect, experiment and perform close to home.

Founder Kang Song started the business in 2017 with a simple idea.

“It started with a friend of mine. I asked him if he wanted to do live music here in the shop, and then it just started organically.”

A musician sings passionately on stage with a microphone, wearing a casual outfit. The vibrant lights and audience create an energetic concert atmosphere.

What began in a small room has since grown into a vibrant creative hub in Rydalmere, bringing together a music shop, music school and café under one roof. The space reflects Kang’s belief that music should be open, welcoming and community led.

“When you walk in, it’s not like someone is watching you saying ‘don’t touch that’. It’s just a welcoming vibe. You can have coffee, listen to music, jump on stage and play.”

That same spirit carries through to Burnt Butter Jam, Gsus4’s monthly open jam night that has become a cornerstone of Western Sydney’s grassroots music scene.

Held on the last Thursday of every month, the event invites musicians of all ages and skill levels to perform together in a relaxed and collaborative environment.

“Anybody can join. Whether you’re just starting out or you’re a professional musician, we welcome everyone.”

The event has grown from a small gathering into a packed monthly session attracting hundreds of musicians and music lovers. For Kang, its success comes down to something simple, community.

“There’s a sense of community and a sense of belonging here, so everybody just wants to jump in.”

Three friends are smiling and chatting at a lively bar. A young man and woman are leaning on a wooden counter, engaged in conversation, while another man stands nearby. The atmosphere is warm and social.

Located in the heart of Western Sydney, Gsus4 also plays an important role in Parramatta’s growing night-time economy, offering live music experiences that are accessible to local audiences.

“It’s quite special because it’s happening here in Western Sydney. There are so many talented musicians locally, and we just provide the platform for them to cultivate their skills and enjoy music together.”

With strong transport connections and a diverse creative community nearby, Parramatta provides the ideal setting for music to thrive after hours.

“We’re situated in the right place from everywhere, from the west to the east, north and south. It’s just a great place to be here in Western Sydney.”

As Burnt Butter Jam continues to grow, Kang hopes it will inspire even more collaboration across the region.

“I want to see more bands forming, more music being released, and more live music happening across Parramatta and Western Sydney.”
