A Timeless Chinese Idiom Brought to Life on Stage Where Friendship Wins Over Conflict

Sandpiper, Clam and Fish is a heartwarming children’s theatre production inspired by a famous Chinese idiom: “When a sandpiper and a clam fight, the fisherman takes the advantage.

In this playful and visually expressive non-verbal drama, a feisty sandpiper and a stubborn river clam become locked in a silly competition to prove who is the hero of the river. But when rivalry replaces friendship, they both fall into the hands of a fisherman—until an unexpected quarrel between the fisherman and his wife gives them the chance to escape.

Filled with humour, movement, colourful staging and thoughtful symbolism, Sandpiper, Clam and Fish speaks to audiences of all cultures and ages. Children will enjoy the characters and physical comedy, while adults will appreciate its universal message: when we fight each other, everyone loses; when we unite, everyone wins.

Created and performed by the China National Theatre for Children (CNTC)—China’s most prestigious children’s theatre company. Hosted by the China Cultural Centre in Sydney.

A joyful, wordless story where friendship triumphs over conflict.
