Hambledon Cottage Celebrates 200 Years
Discover more about this Parramatta landmark and house museum during its Bicentenary Celebrations this April.
13 April
This colonial NSW heritage listed site once owned by pioneer John Macarthur and Elizabeth Macarthur, will be holding a community Bicentennial Day on Saturday 13 April from 10am-4pm. Corner of Hassall Street and Gregory Place, Parramatta
Hosted by the Parramatta & District Historical Society, enjoy fun-filled family activities, market stalls, traditional trade and craft demonstrations, food, entertainment, live music and a house tour including a new exhibition commemorating 200 years at Hambledon Cottage – ‘A very neat little abode’. Enjoy and absorb the timelessness and elegance of this 19th Century Georgian Cottage house museum and parkland setting.
This will be followed up with a week-long program of historic talks and walks at the cottage and children’s activities to coincide with the school holidays.
Sunday 14 April
Bring a picnic and a rug and enjoy a free romantic music performance by Stormer Music from 2pm-4pm at Hambledon Cottage.
Monday 15 and Wednesday 17 April
These school holidays take the kids along to learn about and participate in various colonial games and activities, like how to make a Thaumatrope (optical toy). Games include quoits, hoop race, string art, mix-n-match, Jacobs ladder and much more.
Thursday 18 April and Friday 18 April
The Inland Port tour experiences connections between our First Nation’s people and settlers as they work and play around the river port and surrounding environment. Hear stories of our pioneers’ connections between Parramatta and Sydney through industry, travel and leisure. Explore the old Queens Wharf and the location of the Commissariat Store, Barracks and grain store.

Parramatta & District Historical Society is 110 years old this year. It is the second oldest historical society in NSW. A vibrant heritage organisation that provides monthly history talks and has operated as a tourist site and education facility for over 50 years to educate domestic and international tourists as well as school children about Parramatta’s history.

Come along and hear about the evolution of this beautiful Colonial Georgian cottage, originally built for John Macarthur in 1824 to provide accommodation for his family and friends. Learn about the many influential and prominent people who called it home over the past 200 years.
How to Get Here
Limited parking on site. Option to park at St Ioannis Greek Orthodox Church. 163-165 George Street, cnr Purchase Street. Patrons attending the Hambledon Cottage Bicentenary Celebrations (13 April) can enter the St Ioannis Greek Orthodox Church carpark from 9:45am and depart by 4:30pm.
