This project proposes a large-scale immersive inflatable installation inspired by my ongoing series of ceramic tiki mask purses, which reference cultural commodification and queer allegory. Expanding these sculptural pieces into a large-scale inflatable form, I hope to invite the public to engage with my work on an immersive level, with the opportunity to walk through the installation itself.
Increasing the scale and changing the materiality of my practice will reintroduce bodily engagement in ways that ceramic installations cannot due to their fragility. The tiki mask and purse motifs are drawn from my exploration of cultural commodification and cultural signification within the tourist attractions of the Kingdom of Tonga, as well as the sensibilities present within my ceramic objects.
The title of the work makes an obvious reference to Godzilla due to its scale, and to Priscilla, Queen of the Desert through its nature and extravagance. The final proposed work will be a large illuminated tiki purse, featuring a sei (frangipani) in her ear and a wide open mouth that will be accessible for patrons to walk through and experience the work from all angles.
The project aims to create a camp, memorable, and highly visible installation for Parramatta Lanes Festival, offering visitors an engaging public artwork that is playful, accessible, and celebratory of culture and community.
