Lace - Convict Esther Abrahams' Life in Song
Australian premiere season !
Join us at Old Government House, Parramatta for an intimate and immersive musical performance of “Lace”, as we share the story of one extraordinary First Fleet convict, Esther Abrahams.
Transported for stealing lace, the young milliner endured the eight-month voyage arriving with nothing but her young baby, Rosanna. Surviving starvation, grinding work, and multiple births, Esther eventually married at St. John’s Church Parramatta. She established and managed productive farming estates, was briefly “First Lady” of the Colony, only to then face charges of insanity!
Esther’s indomitable spirit will be brought to life through an inspirational new song-cycle written by former Western Sydney University composer Diana Blom. Her evocative soundscape of ship’s rigging, waves and whistles, interwoven with early 1800’s colonial ditties, is enhanced by lyrics written 230 years later by one of Esther’s very own descendants, Diana Weston.
Presented by Thoroughbass, with performers:
