The Ultimate Guide to Parramatta’s Foundation Day for Historical Lovers

4 mins read

Get ready to unlock the mysteries of Parramatta’s past at Foundation Day.

Parramatta holds a deep historical and cultural significance with beautifully restored heritage buildings and sites added to the National Heritage List and UNESCO World Heritage. Hambledon Cottage is particularly significant as a charming Georgian-style residence that offers a rare glimpse into the past. Built in the 1820s, the cottage was once part of the estate of John Macarthur, a key figure in Australia’s early wool industry. Today, it stands as a testament to Parramatta’s past, with its elegant interiors, period furnishings and tranquil garden setting inviting visitors to step back in time.

On Saturday 1 November, Hambledon Cottage will be transformed into a lively open day welcoming historical enthusiasts, community members and families to come together to discover and experience the history of the second-oldest city in Australia.

Here is everything you need to know about Foundation Day 2025.

1. Historical Tours and Talks

One of the most anticipated activities at the event is the walking tours around three of Parramatta’s most historic heritage sites, Hambledon Cottage, Experiment Farm Cottage and Elizabeth Farm.

Each location offers a unique glimpse into the past through preserved rooms, tales of the families who lived there, and discovering how these sites helped shape the Parramatta we know today. Please note: A small entry fee applies to the guided tours. This contribution helps support the ongoing work of the Parramatta & District Historical Society Inc. and the National Trust of Australia (NSW), ensuring these heritage sites remain accessible to the public.

Additionally, explore the charming Hambledon Cottage grounds with self-guided info trail, perfect for curious minds of all ages. Follow the flags around the reserve and uncover fun, bite-sized “pop-up” information signs that share fascinating stories about Parramatta’s rich heritage and the history. It’s an easy and enjoyable way for families to learn, discover, and connect with the past while enjoying the beautiful surroundings.

2. Market Stalls and Demonstrations

Experience the spirit of Australia’s first recorded fair, held right here in Parramatta in October 1822. Originally organised by the Agricultural Society of NSW, the fair was a vibrant agricultural exhibition designed to promote farming, innovation and community connection.

We honour that legacy with a bustling marketplace filled with vintage treasures, handmade crafts and everyday knick-knacks that reflect the charm and character of the region. Wander through the stalls, meet local makers and discover one-of-a-kind finds that tell a story of tradition and creativity.

Adding to the atmosphere, visitors can witness live demonstrations from the Village Blacksmith, who will bring history to life with the glow of a working furnace. Watch as they showcase traditional forging techniques like twisting, bending, cutting, hardening and tempering. Offering a rare glimpse into the craftsmanship that once powered early Parramatta.

3. Dress the part and join the fun

Why just visit history when you can wear it? Embrace the spirit of Foundation Day by dressing up in your favourite vintage or heritage-inspired outfit. Whether it’s a bonnet and boots or braces and waistcoats, adding a touch of old-world charm to your look makes the day even more memorable.

It’s a great way for families to get into the festive spirit, snap some fun photos at the horse and cart photo booth, and bring Parramatta’s past alive. Don’t be shy! Costumes are encouraged and creativity is celebrated.

4. How to get there

As there will be limited parking around the streets of Hambledon Cottage, carpooling and parking at The St Ioannis Greek Orthodox Church, where the Church has generously provided access to their free car park (entry is via Purchase Street) is recommended, or even better, go for the eco-friendly approach and take public transport.

Visit Transport for NSW to plan your trip.

From free family activities, workshops, live music and food stalls, Foundation Day 2025 is an event that can’t be missed. Look forward to the unique and exciting chance to explore and be inspired by Parramatta’s history.
