MOZART’S CLARINET

With a pioneering spirit Mozart took a rare instrument and enthusiastically embraced it to write the first major concerto for the basset clarinet. The final instrumental work by the great composer, the Concerto for basset clarinet in A major was completed less than two months before his early death at age 35.

The wistful Adagio is familiar to many from its use in numerous well-known film scores such as Out of Africa and The King’s Speech. Rarely, though, is the concerto performed in concert on basset clarinet, the instrument which Mozart chose in his enduring adaptation of an earlier composition for basset horn.

Leading Australian period clarinetist Craig Hill delivers this beguiling concerto in a program which also includes a pair of brooding works by the youngest and eldest of the Bach brothers and the Australian premiere of a symphony by Anton Zimmerman.
